Novice players frequently overlook one of the most important components of rummy strategy: discarding. Both your own and your opponents' chances of winning can be greatly impacted by the card you decide to discard.
  • Forming sets and runs from a hand of cards is the fundamental element of the game of rummy. A run is a string of three or more cards in the same suit, whereas a set is made up of three or four cards of the same rank but different suits. A set number of cards—typically seven or ten, depending on the variation being played—are dealt to each player at the start of the game.
  • Because of this flexibility, you can change your plan of action in response to the cards you draw and the moves your opponents make. You have a better chance of successfully melding your hand before others do if you stay open to different possibilities. It takes both vision and strategic planning to produce winning sets & runs. Prioritizing the formation of runs over sets whenever feasible is a useful strategy because runs frequently offer more melding opportunities because of their sequential nature.
